Taking part in an unmoderated study with an AI Conversation

Last updated: May 22, 2026

Some unmoderated studies include an AI Conversation block, where an AI moderator has a short voice to voice conversation with you. This article walks you through what to expect and how to prepare.

What is an AI Conversation?

An AI Conversation is a short voice exchange between you and an AI moderator. The AI will ask you a few questions, listen to your spoken answers, and may follow up based on what you say.

Your voice is recorded during the conversation so the study creator can review your responses.

How to prepare

Before you start an AI Conversation, take a moment to set yourself up:

  • Wear headphones to avoid echo between your microphone and speakers.

  • Find a comfortable environment where you can speak out loud without feeling self-conscious or disturbing others.

  • Check that your microphone is working and that the app or browser has permission to use it.

What happens during the study

Go through the unmoderated study as you would normally. Before the AI Conversation begins, you'll see a screen that prepares you for what's coming next, letting you know that an AI moderator is about to have a short conversation with you. You won't be caught off guard.

Why does the AI have a conversation with me?

The AI Conversation is there to help you react naturally and think out loud. Speaking is often easier than typing, and an AI moderator can help the process feel less awkward than recording yourself in silence.

Think of the AI as someone who is helping you think out loud. It is there to explore your thoughts with you, not to judge or test you.

You are still encouraged to think aloud throughout the rest of the study, even outside the AI Conversation block.

Does the AI know what I did earlier in the study?

Yes, but only within the current study. The AI has context on what you clicked and any written feedback you shared earlier in this study. This means it may reference your previous answers when asking follow-up questions, so the conversation feels connected to what you've already done. The AI does not track or remember anything from other studies you have taken with Maze. Each study starts fresh.

Will my data be used to train the AI?

No. Your conversation data is not used to train AI models. Maze does not collect your responses for training purposes, and your data is only surfaced to the study creator for research purposes.

You can review our Privacy Policy for more details, and you can request that your data be deleted at any time.
