Using Claude to build and host a prototype for a website test

Claude's design tool can generate interactive, multi-page prototypes from a plain-text description — no design or coding experience required. Once your prototype is hosted at a live URL, you can run a Maze Website Test on it.

Maze works with or without its tracking snippet: without it you still get session recordings; with it you also get quantitative data such as heatmaps and click paths.

Build a prototype with Claude

  1. Go to claude.ai/design

  2. In the prompt field, describe what you want — include the layout, functionality, user flow, and target device.

  3. Claude generates a working prototype. Refine the screens, interactions, and content through follow-up messages until it's ready.

Prompting for URL path changes

For Maze to register each step in a path, every screen needs its own URL. If your screens share a single URL, you may see a “no clicks were detected” message when setting up expected paths.

Multi-page sites

Add a prompt like the one below so Claude builds a true multi-page site rather than a single-page app:

Build this as a multi-page site, not a single-page app. Each link should load a new page with its own unique URL. Use a shared layout so every page uses the same <head> section.

Host your prototype

How you host depends on what you built in Claude:

  • If you have a shareable Claude link — e.g. a Claude Artifact or Claude Design with “Anyone with the link” sharing turned on — you can paste that public URL straight into Maze. Skip ahead to Install the Maze tracking code below.

  • If you only have the exported HTML/code, deploy it to a hosting platform that generates a public URL before testing in Maze. Popular options include:

    • Vercel — great for frameworks like Next.js; offers instant deployments and public URLs.

    • Netlify — ideal for static sites and serverless functions.

    • Firebase or DigitalOcean — alternatives for backend services or traditional hosting.

Once deployed, copy the live URL — you'll add it to your Maze Website Test in the steps below.

Maze tests your prototype via its public URL and doesn't host the file for you, so it needs to be reachable at a link. If your prototype can't be made fully public, use a host that supports password protection or restricted access.

Install the Maze tracking code on your hosted prototype

For snippet-based testing, add the Maze tracking code to your hosted prototype. Because Claude generates prototypes with a shared <head> section, you only need to paste the snippet once — into the <head> of the shared layout. See “Installing the Maze snippet on your website” for full instructions.

Add your hosted prototype to a Maze website test

  1. Copy the live URL of your hosted prototype.

  2. Create a new study and add a Website Test block.

  3. Under Task link, click Add link, paste the URL, and click Add.

  4. Set up your expected paths and launch the test.
