What changes can I make when editing a live unmoderated study?

Last updated: April 19, 2026

In some cases, you may find it helpful to edit an unmoderated study after publishing it.

Such changes may affect how your participants interpret your questions/tasks, potentially impacting your results. This is particularly sensitive when changing a study where participants have already started responding.

To protect the integrity of your data, not all fields in a block can be edited directly.

Overview

You can take the following actions when editing a live unmoderated study.

Edit allowed

It's possible to edit the block directly.

Breaking change

Breaking changes (i.e., changes that are significant enough that it would be challenging to reconcile data collected before and after the edit) are disabled by default.

The only way to make those changes is to create a new version of the block (i.e., duplicate and hide the original).

This way, data collected before the change is presented in the original block, and data collected after the change is presented in the new block.

While some changes can be made directly without duplicating the block, please be aware that changes that significantly affect participants’ interpretation and responses (such as completely changing questions/instructions, reordering blocks, or modifying conditional logic) can profoundly affect the results you collect.

If a change is substantial enough, you may still wish to duplicate the block and hide the original, even if it is not technically a breaking change. This way, you can clearly separate the data collected before and after the change.

Not allowed

It's not possible to make those changes on a live study. To change any of these settings, you’ll need to duplicate the study, or create one from scratch.

Please note that if you have an active panel order, it's not possible to make changes and continue collecting responses. If you need to make any edits to your unmoderated study, you'll need to stop the active panel order or duplicate your study and place a new order.
