Overview
Tree testing allows you to test navigation branches, before designing them. It's a great way to validate the ease of finding items in your product structure.
If designing from scratch, we recommend card sorting first, then tree testing.
How to create a Tree Test:
- Open your draft maze, or create a new one.
- In the blocks list, click Add block, then select a Tree Test block from the drop-down.
- Type your Task. Optionally, add extra details in the Description.
- Add pages to your Tree Structure and organize them according to your product structure.
You can see how this block will appear to testers on the right-side Preview panel.
Tree Test use cases
Tree testing can help you:
- Test the usability of your navigation.
- Validate ideas before designing
- Build a foundation for the design that will lay on top of your site structure.
Tree testing can answer questions like:
- Do my labels make sense?
- Is my content grouped logically?
- Can users find the information they want easily and quickly? If not, what's stopping them?
Analyzing Tree Test results
When you've completed a project containing a Tree Test, your results will appear similar to the screenshot presented below.
Here, you can see both the most popular final category selected by testers (listed as the "End screen") and the most common hierarchy that testers selected (listed under "Most common paths") which enables you to see if there's consensus or disagreement over how to categorize/navigate to content.
