It’s possible to run both unmoderated and moderated testing on mobile devices in Maze.
Unmoderated mobile testing
The most common way to run mobile testing in Maze is with unmoderated mazes.
There are a few different aspects to consider, depending on the block type and the device used by your participants:
Block type | Participant’s device | Screen recording (incl. scrolling) | Results | ||
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Heatmaps | Path analysis | UX metrics/ KPIs
i.e. time on task, success, etc.

Prototype test | Desktop (with mobile prototype) | Y | Y | Y | Y |
Mobile | Simulated
Screen recording isn’t supported in our unmoderated solutions. This functionality can be achieved by running a moderated session.

Known limitations
- Native app testing isn’t currently supported on unmoderated mazes.
- Screen recording isn’t supported in tests done on mobile devices. Why do I see a “Tester screen is being simulated” warning next to my Clips recordings?
Moderated mobile testing
Moderated testing with Interview Studies is a great way to run mobile testing as it allows for direct observation and reactions.
You can use your preferred conferencing tool and upload the recordings afterwards for analysis. Alternatively, you can also use Maze conferencing for automatic uploads. When using Maze conferencing, the participant must have the Zoom app downloaded to join from their mobile device.
Moderated mobile testing involves a dual-device setup, typically requiring participants to use both a desktop and a mobile device. Two approaches are possible:
- Mobile screen sharing: Participants join from the conferencing tool on their mobile device, and share their mobile screen directly in the conferencing tool, while staying on the call on their desktop.
- Desktop mirroring: Participants use screen mirroring from their mobile device to their desktop, while sharing screen in the video conferencing tool.
Tips for success when using moderated for mobile testing
- Extend session times to anticipate any technical challenges.
- Before the session, share instructions and requirements with the participants.
These instructions may include:
- Download video conferencing apps. Please note that screen sharing isn’t supported on mobile browsers.
- Join the conversation on mobile and/or desktop (depending on the researcher’s preference).
- Activate Do Not Disturb mode to prevent notifications and calls and mitigate risk of PII exposure.
- Install the application being tested, if relevant.
Known limitations
- Screen sharing during a moderated session isn’t supported on mobile browsers. For participants to share their screen on a mobile device, you must set up the conferencing link using the Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or Google Meet integration. Then, make sure participants join the meeting via the conferencing mobile app, and not the mobile browser.
