The supported Figma share permissions depend on whether live prototype embed is enabled on your maze:
- Without live prototype embed (Standard): Only 'Anyone with a link can view' is supported.
- With live prototype embed (Beta): When live Figma embed is enabled, there are multiple share permission options. Please refer to the table below for the full breakdown.
Without live prototype embed (Standard)
If you’re using a static version of your Figma prototype, Figma requires access to your entire file in order to load the prototype. This means that you must set the permissions for your Figma file and prototype to Anyone with the link can view.
Otherwise, the import will fail. Updating these settings after import will prevent testers from opening the maze
Note that selecting "Anyone with a link [can view prototypes only]" will also result in an error, since Maze needs access to the file as well.
File sharing settings
- Open your Figma file.
- Click the Share button at the top right corner.
- Select Anyone with a link can view.
Prototype sharing settings
- In Figma, click Present in the top right menu of your Figma file to enter presentation mode.
- Click Share Prototype in the top right corner to create a share URL.
- Set the share settings to Anyone with the link can view.
With live prototype embed (Beta)
If your team has more restrictive file sharing policies, you have the option to enable live prototype embed on your maze. In this case, Figma only requires testers to have access to the prototype, and not to the entire file. This allows for more flexibility in the share settings for your Figma prototypes.
It’s important to note that, if only specific organizations/people have access to a Figma file:
- Only those organizations/people can import the prototype into Maze.
- Only those organizations/people can open mazes linked to that prototype without issues.
For instance, if you restrict access down to Anyone at organization can view prototypes only, only members and guests of your Figma organization will be able to import the prototype into Maze. The same goes for any testers to whom you send that maze. Learn more about all supported permissions and use cases in the next section
Supported live embed permissions when live embed is enabled
The table below breaks down all supported permissions and expected behavior, from the least to the most restrictive.
Note that different permissions allow you to test with different types of users:
- Maze hired testers: Testers sourced via the Maze panel
- Anonymous testers: Any users who receive a link to test your maze
- Internal testers: Users who have been granted access to your Figma file, either at an individual level, or because they’re a part of your Figma organization
Group | Access | Maze hired testers? | Anonymous testers? | Internal testers? |

Only people invited to this file | Can view prototypes only | - | - | Yes 2 |
1 Provided that they have access to the Figma prototype, either at an individual level or because they're a member or guest of your organization.
2 With this sharing setting, guests will not be able to import the Figma prototype into Maze. They can, however, open and run a live maze.
Use cases
- Anyone with the link: Use a public Figma link when you need to distribute your maze outside your organization — for instance, when hiring testers from the Maze panel, or otherwise sharing your maze link with anonymous external testers. With live prototype embed enabled, you have the option to select Can view prototypes only in order to give access only to the prototypes, and lock access to the underlying file.
- Anyone at organization, and Anyone at organization with the link: Only authenticated members and guests of your Figma organization can import the prototype into Maze and test the live maze.
- Only people invited: Only people you’ve explicitly invited to the Figma file can import it into Maze and test the live maze. This may be helpful if you require full control over who sees your prototype, and need to test only with an internal audience.
Troubleshooting
Why am I seeing a “Linking prototype failed, something went wrong” error?
This error message appears when Figma doesn’t give Maze permission to link a prototype.
If you're seeing this error:
- Please ensure that the Figma account that is connected to Maze has permission to view the prototype you’re trying to add. For instance, if your prototype is shared only with people in your organization, only those accounts will be able to import the prototype into Figma.
- If you’ve connected the wrong account (for instance, a personal account instead of your professional one), you can disconnect the Maze app in the Figma account settings, and then log in to the correct account when importing the prototype.
If the steps above don't help, please reach out to our Support team for help.
Why is my maze not loading after importing a Figma prototype?
If your Figma prototype is restricted to specific groups/people, only that internal audience will be able to open the maze using the browser where they’re authenticated into Figma.
For instance, if your prototype is shared only with people in your organization, only logged-in members and guests will be able to load a maze containing that prototype.
Opening a maze preview or a live maze as an unauthenticated user will lead the maze to stall with an endless loader on the ‘Get Started’ button.
Troubleshooting
If you or your testers are seeing this issue:
- Please confirm that your file is using supported Figma permissions.
- If your prototype is restricted to specific groups/people, ensure that you or your testers have access to the Figma prototype, and are logged into Figma using the same browser used to open the maze.
